| Notes |
- Lester's parents were the owners of Lester Ltd., a large costume company. He was raised in Chicago, an only child. A nanny was with him all day as his parents were working. He had many different kinds of lessons. As a young boy, he excelled at hunting. At age 15, he shot a buffalo with a bow and arrow while riding horseback. Also, at a young age he shot and killed a large polar bear.
He spent three years in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during World War II. In the fall of 1946 he enrolled at the Utah State Agricultural Collge in Logan, Utah. While there, he met and married Joan Darlene Tingey. They spent the school months living in North Logan while Les worked on finishing his degree. Joan also took classes. They attended church in North Logan where they worked with the youth. They produced several plays and road shows while there that the youth and community enjoyed very much. Besides the creative talents of Les and Joan, they had the advantage of being able to get costumes from Lester, Ltd.
During the summers, Les and Joan lived in Chicago and helped out at Lester, Ltd. Lester Sr. was hoping that Les would take on the business but Les did not share that same interest. During that time, they put in for a mission and were able to serve in the Southwest Indian Mission, in New Mexico.
At the end of their mission they spent some time in Hawaii. This was a beautiful place and they always wanted to return someday. (They finally did, almost 20 years later with their teenage children.)
When the mission was over and they returned to Logan Les received his Masters degree in education and Joan worked on her master's in psychology. They received a most wonderful blessing, a beautiful baby girl, Darlene, was born, followed a few years later, by twin boys, Lester and Fred. Then came another boy, Clay, to complete the family.
After graduation from USAC Les went on to Indiana University to get a Doctorate in education degree (Ed. D.). After he received his Doctorate he stayed at IU and worked the department for two more years.
In 1966 the family moved to Logan, Utah, where Lester served as associate professor of education and head of the department of instructional media.
In the 1970s, Lester and Joan were both diagnosed with cancer. They both died in 1974, just 6 months apart.
